The Good Old Days of BPA-Free Receipts -- Photo Credit: Steve_Snodgrass on flickr

It has made the mainstream news!  An Environmental Working Group (EWG) report published this week analyzes the presence of Bisphenol A (BPA) in some cash register receipts.  EWG found that 40% of the receipts sampled from stores, restaurants, post offices, ATMs and gas stations nationwide contained the estrogen-mimicking chemical.  The report also concluded that BPA can easily rub off onto the skin of anyone handling the receipts. I have to wonder at the slow conversion of the term “global warming” to “climate change.” Oh, you can still turn up a few die-hard websites proclaiming the immediate need to address global warming. They are the brave. [click to continue…]

I feel like I’ve had my head stuck in the sand for the last nine months!  A few days ago, I just happened to stumble across an article published last October in Science News that floored me.  How could this information not have been shouted from the rooftops?  How could I have missed it?  While I’ve been worrying about BPA in plastic bottles and my tomato sauce, I’ve been handling another source almost every day — receipts! Vegetables for Chicken Stock

There’s nothing like the aroma of chicken stock bubbling away on the stove.  Bone broth is rich and flavorful — so much better than anything from a box or a can.  It’s also inexpensive, nutritious and very easy to make!  Homemade stock lends wonderful flavor and nutrition to soups, sauces, stews, and vegetables.  Use it as the liquid base for cooking rice or add a dash of it to spaghetti sauce to give it that cooked-all-day taste. Recently our seven-year-old son was ready to give me the Bad Mommy of the Year Award.  I had to agree with him — but for a different reason.   It all started with his semi-annual trip to the dentist for a teeth cleaning.  I made sure to phone the dentist’s office ahead of time to request that he not be given the fluoride paint job at the end of the visit — you know, the one where the kids can’t eat any crunchy foods for several hours afterwards lest the protective coating break off.  (I figure that if I call in my request ahead of time I can prevent any unpleasantness while he’s sitting in the chair and I have to explain that we don’t DO fluoride treatments.)

Happy Friday! I have two links to share.  They are both about changing how we interact with the environment. We know it’s important to take good care of our planet. How far do we go as individuals in preserving it? What are our responsibilities? More importantly, how much will we need to change how we operate on a day-to-day basis in order to be better prepared for our future? [click to continue…]

Update:   Giveaway is now closed.

BodyEarth is hosting its first giveaway!  One lucky person will win brand new copies of what I call my “starter books” — the ones that got me really interested in eating Real Food.  Until I read these two books, I was leery of eating too much of the butter and cream that I’ve always loved.  I felt guilty before digging into a meal of “heart attack on a plate” — you know, a gooey omelet and bacon.  Now I see food completely differently! Introduction:

How can you go wrong with heavy cream, fresh-picked heirloom strawberries and organic dark chocolate?  Really?!  I’d had one of those days recently and I decided to make myself a little treat.  Luckily, we had just returned home from a local farm with the most delicious strawberries in existence.  I especially love the little sweet ones that smell so strong in the warm sun.  Eating them alone is ambrosia enough, but I was in the mood for some chocolate.  Since I almost always have chocolate and heavy cream on hand (staples), I was all set!
